Stick handling is at the heart of lacrosse. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, mastering your stick allows you to maintain ball control, evade opponents, and create scoring opportunities.
In this article, we’ll show you 3 simple yet powerful drills to improve your stick handling quickly, either at home or on the field.
Drill 1: The “Figure 8”

Goal
Improve accuracy and control during fast stick movements.
How to do it
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart
- Use your stick to guide the ball around your legs in a smooth figure-8 pattern
- Switch hands each time the ball passes in front of your body (right → left → right, etc.)
- Repeat 10 times, gradually increasing your speed
Tip
Keep your eyes up — practice scanning the “field” to build game awareness, not just ball focus.
Drill 2: The “Wall Pass”

Goal
Strengthen hand-eye coordination and passing accuracy.
How to do it
- Use a flat wall and your stick
- Pass the ball against the wall at different heights
- Catch it with your other hand each time
- Repeat 3 sets of 20 passes
Variation
Change your distance from the wall to increase difficulty.
Drill 3: The “Quick Stick Movement”

Goal
Develop speed and fluidity of stick movements.
How to do it
- Hold the stick in your dominant hand
- Make rapid side-to-side movements, simulating direction changes
- Alternate between left and right hands
- Perform 4 sets of 30 seconds, resting 15 seconds between each set
Tip
Focus on both speed and control, not just speed alone.
Additional Tips
- Practice these drills 3–4 times per week for fast improvement
- Always include a warm-up before starting to avoid injuries
- Occasionally record yourself to analyze movements and correct mistakes
